The dollar has been on a run and the assets that trade against it are feeling it. The dollar index is up 1.59% over the past month and 3.46% over the past year, and it pulled back from an 18-month high on October 15 after three consecutive weekly gains, per Trading Economics. The euro sits at roughly 1.1211 and the yen has been trading near the 160 area that previously drew Tokyo's attention. Gold, after a strong stretch, was heading for a weekly fall, quoted around $4,178 to $4,198 on October 16 with $4,000 cited as the downside case. Bitcoin was at $81,552.25 on CoinDesk's front page, down 0.71%, with ether at $2,435.10, down 1.13%. Hotter inflation is what is funding the move. September consumer prices ran 3.7% annually and producer prices came in at 6.3%, and markets now put the odds of a December Fed hike somewhere between roughly 77% and 92% depending on the source, with Chair Warsh saying the hotter data has not changed his view of the economy. Higher for longer means a firmer dollar and higher real yields, and that is a direct headwind for anything that pays no coupon. One instrument has refused to follow. The Brazilian real is the strongest major currency against the dollar this year, up near 11% year to date according to a Euronews analysis published April 16, ahead of the Australian dollar at 7% and the Norwegian krone at close to 7%. Holding a gain like that while the dollar prints an 18-month high is the part worth examining, because it means something local is outweighing the dollar. Two things are. The carry is still wide, and the politics turned. Flavio Bolsonaro took the October 5 first round with 47.03% of valid votes against Lula's 45.16%, markets read him as the more fiscally restrictive option, and the real rallied through 5.00 to a 17-month high near 4.98 before easing back toward 5.05 to 5.10 as polling tightened. The runoff is October 25. A Datafolha poll taken October 6 and 7 had Bolsonaro at 49% to Lula's 45%, Atlas and Bloomberg had 51.1% to 45.7%, and on October 16 prediction markets priced him near 78% on Kalshi and 77.8% on Polymarket. Traders are watching 5.00 as support and 5.10 as resistance into the vote. Our operator has published his own technical case for a medium-term long position in the real, which you can read on TradingView here: Brazilian Real: A Real Opportunity. That is his analysis and his own position rather than a recommendation from this site, and the usual line applies: the operators of this site may hold positions in assets covered here.
