Two things in Thursday's tape point at the same thing. BlackRock chief executive Larry Fink named a US recession trigger and warned on $40 trillion of national debt, arguing that spending on artificial intelligence data centers has grown large enough that slowing it would hurt the broader economy. Separately, the Kospi fell 8% into circuit breakers on a Korean chipmaker rout, the Nasdaq Composite had dropped 1.9% the session before, and copper extended Wednesday's 1.6% fall while gold rose 1% and the 10-year yield dropped to 5.08%. InvestingLive's Giuseppe Dellamotta described that combination to CoinDesk as stagflationary, with risk assets and the dollar underperforming while gold outperforms. The read-through for bitcoin is uncomfortable. It is trading as a high-beta risk asset against an AI capital expenditure cycle it has no exposure to, which means the thing setting its price this week is a semiconductor financing question. 10x Research told CoinDesk it still prefers holding bitcoin through the unwind but only while it stays above $78,000, and suggests using ether as a hedge on bitcoin longs. That is a positioning view rather than a thesis, and it is roughly where the institutional read sits right now.
