Standard Chartered will let affluent UAE clients classified as professional investors buy and sell bitcoin and ether directly through their existing bank accounts, after receiving licensing approval from Dubai's Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority. No separate wallet or third-party platform is involved. The bank told CoinDesk it will manage custody and settlement internally using what it calls a closed-loop model, with execution running through Zodia Markets, a venture backed by the bank's own SC Ventures unit. The sequence here is the thing to watch rather than the launch. Standard Chartered started institutional spot trading through its UK arm in July 2025, extended that to the UAE on September 3, and has now pushed it down to private clients six weeks later. Eligible clients already had crypto ETFs, structured products and over-the-counter derivatives, so this closes the last gap between holding exposure through a wrapper and holding the asset. The bank says other markets will follow but has not said when.
