A perpetual futures venue called Papertrade, running on Hyperliquid's HyperEVM layer, grew from roughly $14 million in USDC deposits at launch to about $118 million in total value locked by 11 a.m. ET Saturday. It offers up to 1,000x leverage, a level at which a 0.1% adverse move wipes out the position. For scale, Hyperliquid's own Bitcoin leverage generally runs 20x to 40x. The number that deserves attention is the backing: about $11 billion of open interest across 2,349 positions, supported by roughly $54 million. If the pool runs short, winning traders' unpaid profits go into a queue, though original margin is returned. The mechanism is the unusual part. Losing traders are issued PAPER tokens minted from their own losses, with about 2.77 billion in supply and roughly 95% staked for USDC rewards that have reached about $9.95 million, paid at 1% of realized profit and loss. Transfers are disabled for now. Bankless author David Christopher described it as "essentially a casino where losing traders gradually become owners of the house's future earnings." The founders, known as Jez and Blurr, operate under partially anonymous identities. The timing is its own commentary: the SEC approved six Volatility Shares 3x products on October 2 that still cannot trade pending an effective registration statement, while an anonymous team shipped five hundred times that leverage in a weekend.
